In every meeting this season between these Pacific Division rivals, the Sharks have been quick to show the Ducks that last year's playoffs are the past and it's a brand new season; in the past four games, they outscored the Ducks 16-6. And how would the Ducks now fare against the Sharks' newly awoken offensive arsenal?
On Thursday night, the Sharks scored their fifth victory against a team hungry to stay in the playoff race. Yet this time, the scoring came from a blue line that was missing Boyle—the Sharks' top scoring defenseman. Boyle's upper-body injury meant new D pairings for this game, as Demers was called up from Worcester and partnered with Vlasic, moving Vlasic's usual partner Blake up to play with Murray.

In the 1st period the bad blood between the 2 teams became apparent, with Nabby shoving Perry in the face
and Pornstache throwing down—not with Shelley, but with Clowe. Clowe dominated Pornstache in this tangle, landing right-hander after right-hander. Not long after Clowe's fight, Setoguchi drilled Chipchura into the boards, firing up the crowds. At 10:29 another scrap ensued, with Staubitz letting Nick Boynton have it and wrestling him to the ice. The 1st period ended scoreless.
The 2nd period opened with a Sharks power play and saw Vlasic getting shots to the net. Pickles was rewarded for his efforts when he received the puck from Marleau's faceoff win and fired it past Hiller at 2:47—his first goal in 36 games! And that's another schneid busted! Towards the end, captain Blake took a perfect centering pass from Thornton to score his second goal of the week and make it 2-0. No worries over splitting up Pickles and Blake!

Early in the 3rd period the Ducks were able to cut the Sharks' lead in half when Beleskey beat Nabby with a wrist shot. Heatley, eager to add to his 29 goals on his 29th bday, had a round of three shots in a row but none went in. Nearing the end, the Sharks faced a 5-on-6 as the Ducks coach decided to pull Hiller out of the net to add an extra man on the Ducks power play. Bad idea, coach—Marleau ended up scoring an empty-netter with 5.5 seconds left in the game, bringing his goal total of the season to 35! With their terrific, hard-working play tonight despite Boyle's absence, it was no surprise who made the night's 3 stars:
3rd star: Marc-Edouard Vlasic
2nd star: Patrick Marleau
3rd star: Marc-Edouard Vlasic
2nd star: Patrick Marleau
1st star: Rob Blake
Suck it, Ducks! Happy birthday Heater!
